September 28, 2017 (Ottawa, Ontario) – Canada’s largest gathering of its vibrant sport tourism industry will be heading to Edmonton, Alberta for the 2020 event. The Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance (CSTA) will hold Sport Events Congress 2020 (SEC20) at the Edmonton Conference Centre with the Westin Edmonton and the Courtyard by Marriott Downtown as the host hotels.
The 2020 edition of Sport Events Congress will be an opportunity for the more than 400 sport event rights holders, tourism professionals, event management firms and suppliers from the sport tourism industry to experience Edmonton’s Ice District first-hand. Plans are also in place to take in an activity at Rogers Place during the conference, scheduled for March 24-26, 2020.
One of the important elements in choosing a location for this event is the opportunity to create a memorable sport tourism experience for our delegates,” said Rick Traer, CEO, Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance. “Edmonton and the Ice District will be a wonderful showcase of the rejuvenation of a downtown area with a sports facility as the anchor, but with so much more to offer. It adds a very desirable feature for our delegates to learn first-hand how the different partners worked together to bring the vision to life.”
“As an active member of the CSTA for 15 years, Edmonton Events is pleased to further demonstrate our support for the organization. We are thrilled to welcome Congress delegates back to our city in 2020,” said Lindsay Harrison, Senior Manager, Edmonton Events. “Edmonton is experiencing a remarkable revitalization that has not only physically impacted the landscape here since we last hosted in 2014, but is also transforming the way we approach sport tourism. We look forward to showcasing all that our city has to offer.”
Edmonton Events is a partnership between Edmonton Tourism and the City of Edmonton. This will mark the second time that Edmonton has hosted the congress. The first was in 2014 where Edmonton saw total economic activity valued at $1.35 million as a result of hosting the event. Sport Events Congress 2018 will be held in Halifax, while Ottawa is hosting in 2019.
