2018-2020 Quidditch Championship Host Locations Announced

Quidditch Canada can today reveal host cities for its 2018/19 and 2019/20 season Major Events. With this announcement, Quidditch Canada is the first quidditch organization in the world to successfully implement a multi-year bidding cycle. “This step brings us in line with other Canadian sport organizations,” said Bidding Manager Sachin Kotecha, “Planning two years in advance also allows our host cities to have more time to help us create memorable events.”

2018/19 Season

The 2018/19 Western Regional Championship will take place at the University of Victoria in Victoria, British Columbia on November 10/11, 2018. The University of Victoria successfully hosted Quidditch Canada’s 2017 National Championship and their outstanding facilities will serve as a great place for the Western Regional Championship. “We are honoured to host the 2018 Western Regional Championships this fall at the University of Victoria. We are looking forward to welcoming teams from across the region and leaving a positive impression on the community,” said Kassidy Smids-Dyk, President of UVic Valkyries Quidditch.

The 2018/19 Eastern Regional Championship will take place on outdoor fields at the Civic Recreation Complex in Oshawa, Ontario on November 3/4, 2018. Sport Durham and the City of Oshawa hosted last season’s Eastern Regional Championship and their bid will build on the strong foundation from their previous hosting experience. “Sport Durham is excited to collaborate with partners to welcome Quidditch Canada back to the City of Oshawa for the 2018 Quidditch Eastern Regional Championship at the Oshawa Civic Recreation Complex in November,” said Brandon Pickard, Manager of Tourism, Regional Municipality of Durham. “Building off the success of the 2017 event, we will once again focus on enhancing the athlete, volunteer and spectator experience and will continue to support the growth of the sport by introducing more youth within Durham Region to participate.”

The 2019 National Championship will take place at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario on March 23/24, 2019. After the biggest National Championship in Quidditch Canada’s history last year in Hamilton, Tourism Hamilton will continue to support Quidditch Canada’s goals of growth and fantastic events. “We are delighted to bring back the Quidditch Canada National Championship to Hamilton and McMaster University in 2019. We look forward to extending another warm Hamilton welcome to participants from across Canada,” said Carrie Brooks-Joiner, Manager of Tourism & Events, Tourism and Culture Division, City of Hamilton.

2019/20 Season

The 2019/20 Western Regional Championship will take place at Hjorth Park in Surrey, British Columbia on November 9/10, 2019. Surrey last hosted Quidditch Canada’s Western Regional Championship in the 2016/17 season. That event was the runner-up for the City of Surrey’s inaugural Sport in the City Award. “This is a unique opportunity for us to host a growing sport with a dedicated community of players,” said City of Surrey Mayor Linda Hepner. “It is also a chance to showcase the game to those not familiar with it and hopefully inspire a few to take up this fun and inclusive sport.”

The 2019/20 Eastern Regional Championship will take place at the University of Guelph in Guelph, Ontario on November 2/3, 2019. This will be Guelph’s first Quidditch Canada Major Event, and they hope to build a strong legacy. “The

University of Guelph Quidditch Club is honoured to have the opportunity to host Eastern Regionals 2019/2020. Along with our partnership with The City of Guelph, both the Guelph Gryphons and Royal City Quidditch look forward to running a successful event,” said Alicia Cortes of the University of Guelph Quidditch Club.

The 2020 National Championship will take place in the dome at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta on March 28/29, 2020. Quidditch Canada is thrilled to bring a Major Event to Alberta for the very first time in partnership with Edmonton Events and the Edmonton Aurors Quidditch Club. “We are ecstatic to welcome athletes from across the country to Edmonton for the Quidditch Canada National Championships 2020” said Lindsay Harrison, Director of Edmonton Events. “Edmonton is proud to bring such a unique, competitive event to our city.”

“I would first off like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who was involved in the bid process; from the host cities, to the volunteers to the selection team. This is a very difficult process and without your tireless efforts these decisions would not be possible. To the winning host cities, congratulations! I am looking forward to working with each of you to create high quality tournaments in the upcoming seasons.”
