March 29, 2016 – Charlottetown, PEI – The City of Charlottetown will play host to the second annual Atlantic Canada Event Summit to be held June 14-16, 2016, with Mayor Clifford Lee serving as honourary chair of the Summit.

“Charlottetown has become a leader in Canada’s sport tourism industry, and we are proud to host this important gathering of municipal, community and industry event leaders from across Atlantic Canada,” said Mayor Lee. “We applaud the efforts of the City of Moncton and Events Moncton in taking a leadership role in the establishment of the initial Summit last June and look forward to continuing to share our success and grow the industry.”

The initial Atlantic Canada Event Summit saw political, community and event leaders from all four Atlantic Provinces gather in Moncton, N.B. surrounding the hosting of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015. The Summit concluded with a number of outcomes including a unified decision to strengthen the collaboration and host future Summits.

“After a successful Summit in Moncton last June, it’s important we continue to strengthen our ties here in Atlantic Canada,” said Larry Nelson, Chair of Events Moncton. “As a region we need to work together to bring in more event business, along with the economic and cultural benefits events provide.”

Sport tourism is a $5.2 billion industry in Canada and is one of the fastest growing tourism sectors. A growing number of Atlantic Canadian communities are using events and sport hosting as a community economic development initiative. These events attract new visitors and enhance awareness of the destinations.

The Summit is open to anyone in the economic development, tourism, sport, cultural and event hosting industry. It will feature presentations on measuring success with events, tips for communities bidding for events, community success stories from across the region and major event hosting opportunities for Atlantic Canada.

The Atlantic Canada Event Summit is an annual event bringing together political, community and event leaders from all four Atlantic Provinces with the goals of; increasing collaboration with event hosting in Atlantic Canada, examining the sharing of event best practices and  enhancing opportunities with events for the region.
