(Regina) March 2 – The Saskatchewan Little League has won the bid to host the 2018 Big League Baseball Championship, in Regina.
Hundreds of competitors, coaches, spectators, and volunteers will converge on the city to take part in the national seven-day competition. Teams of 15 to 18 year-old Divisional Champions from across the country will go head-to-head for the honour of representing Canada at the Big League Baseball World Series held each year in Easley, South Carolina.
“We were very happy to work with Saskatchewan Little League and the Regina Hotel Association to bring the 2018 Big League Baseball Canadian Championship tournament to Regina. Regina has a passionate baseball community and we are excited to welcome yet another national championship event to our city. We look forward to showcasing all that our vibrant community has to offer to the athletes and visitors travelling to Saskatchewan for the event in 2018,” said Kirk Morrison, Director of Events, Conventions and Tradeshows for Tourism Regina.
The Championship will be held in July of 2018 at Optimist Park, with Currie Field held as a secondary location.
“This is a great opportunity for players who have continued with the Little League program to showcase their talents in front of the hometown crowd. Success at the national level the past few years has increased the interest in Little League across the province and continues to grow this great sport of baseball,” said John Leonard, District Administrator for Saskatchewan Little League.
This isn’t the first time the Big League Baseball Championship has come to Regina; it was also hosted in 2005 and 2010. The city has built a strong reputation as the home of provincial, national, international and world-class sporting events. As a community recognized for its dedication to sport, it has welcomed an impressive variety of successful provincial, national and international baseball events throughout the years.
